Technical terms

ELECTRICAL GRID

An electricity network consisting of generating stations that produce electrical power, high voltage transmission lines that carry power from distant sources to demand centers, and distribution lines that connect individual customers.

POWER STATION, GENERATING STATION or POWER PLANT

An industrial facility for the generation of electric power. Most burn fossil fuels to generate electricity, while others use nuclear power or renewable energy..

FEASIBILITY STUDY

An assessment of the practicality of a proposed project or system.

WIND TURBINE

a machine that converts kinetic energy created by wind into electrical energy.

ROTOR, BLADE

Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines have 3 blades attached at a common horizontal axis in the form of a rotor.

OFFSHORE

Situated in seas or oceans, in the context of wind farms generally not far from a large landmass on the continental shelf.

MICRO-SITING

The precise location of wind farms to maximise production potential.

DEVELOPER

the company who creates the wind farms.

OPERATOR

The company who runs and maintains the wind farms.

BRIBE (v, n)

To dishonestly persuade someone to act in one's favour by a gift of money (a bribe) or other inducement.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

The precise location of wind farms to maximize production potential.

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Any release of a gaseous compound capable of absorbing infrared radiation, thereby trapping and holding heat in the atmosphere and ultimately causing the “greenhouse effect”.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

The total amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular individual, organization, or community, expressed as a carbon dioxide equivalent.
